Student Takes Part in Prestigious Research Internship

November 10, 2023
Over the summer, sophomore Sarah Joseph had the opportunity to learn as part of a select group from around the world as part of the Stowers Summer Scholars program at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. The institute, located blocks from the Rockhurst University campus, invites outstanding undergraduate students to be part of an intensive eight-week experience learning from and working alongside researchers in the center’s labs. It was not Joseph’s introduction to the Stowers Institute. Arriving at Rockhurst having had some previous lab experience in high school, Joseph was looking to build her skills as a researcher. Her faculty...

Ten Years In, Mathapalooza Spreads the Joy of Math
March 29, 2022
Mathapalooza started a decade ago as exactly the sort of event that name would imply — an invitational, gleeful exploration of the sometimes-dreaded school subject. That was the goal — to make mathematics approachable and even fun for young students. For Zdenka Guadarrama, Ph.D., professor of mathematics who founded Mathapalooza with a colleague, what started as a single-day event has...

Former Transfer Student Goes From Full-Time Server to Future CPA
March 11, 2022
As an 18-year-old high school graduate, Mariah Schneider made the decision to stay in her hometown of Kansas City and find a full-time job. She ended up at one of Rockhurst students’ favorite places to eat in nearby Brookside, Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant, for more than 10 years. Schneider’s life is much different now than she was at 18: The former National Honor Society member is about to graduate from Rockhurst with an Accounting degree, is a new mom, just finished choosing among several prestigious internship options through RU, and will be pursuing her MBA in 2023 (also at Rockhurst).

The student support network at Rockhurst is strong and is made stronger by student leaders who serve as tutors or student instructors in the Learning Center. The service isn’t just for the student receiving the extra instruction, however. Many tutors and SI’s go on to pursue careers in education – several deciding on this direction or a new direction after working in the Learning Center.

NBA Player Speaks to CSD Students on the Importance of Client-Clinician Bond
March 3, 2022
From an outsider’s perspective, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist probably appeared to have it all. Even as a talented basketball player with a loving family and good group of friends growing up in New Jersey, he said he felt isolated for so much of his young life, in fear of being heard. All because of his stutter. Kidd-Gilchrist, who won a national NCAA...
