Inclement Weather Update - 2/14/20
2/15/20 UPDATE:
Due to the extreme temperatures, snowfall and slick roadways, along with resulting intermittent power blackouts by energy companies, Rockhurst University will cancel all classes and activities for the remainder of today and tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 16. Students who are student teaching, or who have internships or clinicals, should check with their supervisor about whether they are required to be present. Students enrolled in a joint program at RCN or UMKC should check the status of classes at those campuses.
The MAC will be closed today and tomorrow. Staff are encouraged to take a “traditional snow day” to attend to any household issues caused by the weather, therefore University offices will also be closed.
President’s Cabinet made this decision in accordance with our University values, seeking to balance cura apostolica (care for the work) with cura personalis (care for the person), and recognizing the unusual and extreme conditions. In addition, we seek to be good stewards of our resources, endeavoring to conserve energy by reducing the amount of people on campus. Please use caution if you must leave your homes for essential reasons and read the following precautionary information carefully.
Potential Power Outages
Utility companies throughout the Kansas City area have announced controlled power outages in response to excessive demand due to the extremely cold temperatures. These outages are expected to last from 30 to 60 minutes at a time and there will be no advance warning. The timeframe of when the outages are no longer necessary has not been determined. Please observe the following precautions in anticipation of a potential power outage on campus:
- Charge your mobile phone
- Power down and unplug all unnecessary devices and equipment
- Delay using dishwashers and laundry facilities
- Students in Town House Village, Rock Row and on-campus houses should let faucets drip
- If you lose power, bundle up and stay where you are, avoiding opening doors
- Do not use open flames of any sort for warmth or light
- Students in on-campus houses should call security immediately if their heat doesn’t come on again after power is restored
- Monitor RockAlerts for additional information as it becomes available
- Power outages can sometimes interfere with University phone lines. Therefore, contact security on their landline at (816) 333-1388 if Ex. 4010 is not working.
