French Major

Program Description 

The French major provides a robust foundational knowledge in language, literature, culture, professional French and film that prepares you for exciting careers and opens many doors. The sequence of courses will lead to a senior capstone project, and you will receive personalized mentoring for it. A French major can be combined with another major or minor.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Develop communication skills in the target language at the advanced level.  
  • Show understanding, appreciation and respect for another culture. 
  • Grow in critical and creative thinking in the target language.  
  • Grow awareness of social justice in another region.  
  • Gain insight into one's own language and culture.

  • Faculty-led summer study abroad programs, such as at the Catholic University of Lyon 
  • Service learning with the local Haitian community, other immigrants or families from French-speaking Africa 
  • French Club on campus 
  • For several classes, students are given a French-speaking tour of the collections at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
  • Pi Delta Phi (National French Honor Society) 
  • Students have the opportunity to become French tutors in the Aylward-Dunn Learning Center on campus

  • Our French majors have won teaching assistantships from the French government for the TAPIF program to teach English in France. 
  • Graduates of the French program go on to pursue careers as French teachers, translators and in business.
