Bright Futures Fund Schools

Mission: The Bright Futures Fund works to build new foundations of education and faith by helping students in need receive a Catholic education. Through these programs, we aim to develop a foundation of social justice within every student and build communities where families can feel safe and welcome, regardless of economic or immigration status.
Location: To be determined, as we have various opportunities at our two schools – Our Lady of Hope (4232 Mercier Kansas City, MO 64111) and Holy Cross School (121 N Quincy Kansas City, MO 64123)
Activities: Varies depending on student's availability, location, and strengths. After-school assistance (reading with students, homework help, planning, participating in and leading activities, etc.). During school assistance (assist with classroom and extra-curricular activities, general clerical duties, and other duties as assigned). Possibility of placement with specific extra-circular activities based on student's ability, location, and school semester: ex. assistant volleyball coach, cross country coach, cultural arts club assistant, music instruction, etc.
Hours Operation: After-school assistance – 3:30pm-6:30pm. Other times will fall within the regular school day and alter depending on the student's abilities. 
Please Note: Successful completion of the VIRTUS – Protecting God's Children training program is required before placement can start.

Hope Faith - Homeless Assistance Campus

Mission: Answering God's call to serve those experiencing homelessness in the Kansas City area.
Location: 705 Virginia Ave, Kansas City, Missouri 64106
Hours of Operation: Monday - Wednesday & Friday - 6:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Thursday - 6:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.mSaturday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Activities: Interact with guests (clients) visiting the Hope Faith campus, assist with programs and services, general clerical duties, filing, collecting data and information, and other duties as assigned.
Hours Needed: Can work with your schedule. 

Jumpstart KC

Mission: Jumpstart is a national early education organization working toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. This campus-based AmeriCorps program recruits and trains college students to work with preschool children in Head Start and other low-income early learning programs. Community Work-Study (CWS) students who can commit to working for Jumpstart approximately 11 hours/week (for a total of 300 hours over the academic year) will receive a $1,252 AmeriCorps education award upon completion of service to apply toward next year's tuition.
Location: To be determined. Head Start/early education program in Kansas City, Missouri.
Hours of Operation: You must be available for a minimum of one of these three-time slots: 1) Monday and Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. OR 2) Tuesday & Thursday, 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. OR 3) Wednesday & Friday 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Activities: Facilitate Jumpstart sessions with a team of peers (includes reading, singing songs, playing games, and participating in center activities with preschool children) and attend team planning meetings.

Please Note: This site requires a commitment to a minimum of 11 hours each week during the school year.

Operation Breakthrough

Mission: To help children living in poverty develop to their fullest potential by providing them with a safe, loving, and educational environment. Operation Breakthrough also strives to support and empower the children's families through advocacy, referral services, and emergency aid.
Activities: Rockhurst CWS students can work as Donation Specialist Volunteers, School Age Village assistants, or Sorting Room Volunteers. The Donation Specialist Volunteer will help in our warehouse with donation intake and sorting to ensure donations are taken to the appropriate places within the building. The School-Age Village Assistant will assist with daily operations in our school-aged area. Tasks include filing paperwork, sorting, creating educational kits for students, and other similar jobs. The Sorting Room Volunteer will help create a donation sorting and organizing system. Donations will then move to different areas within the school to distribute.
Location: 3039 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri 64108. This site is only 10 minutes away from RU via the Troost 25 MAX bus line.
Hours of Operation: Operation Breakthrough is open 7:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Hours Needed/Available:

  • Early Education (infant-preschool): 9-12pm or 3:30-5:30pm
  • School Age tutor/reading buddy (Kindergarten-8th grade): 3:30-5:30
  • Center Resource volunteers (donations, pantry, office help, etc.): 9-12pm or 1-4pm

Please note: Students will need to attend an orientation, TB test, background check ($15 fee), fingerprinting ($41), and must be fully vaccinated/boosted. 

Troostwood Community Garden

Mission: To provide fresh food options to neighbors and address the situation of a food desert.
Location: 5142 Paseo Blvd, Kansas City, Missouri (across the street from Corcoran Hall).
Activities: General gardening work: weeding the plant and flower beds, tying plants, planting and watering vegetables and flowers, picking up litter, raking and bagging leaves, cutting grass, moving tools, helping with compost, and keeping the garden tidy. Off-season work: light office/secretarial help and help with research grants.
Hours needed: Monday through Saturday; can be negotiated with your schedule.
Orientation: This will be offered on-site.

Troost Elementary School

Mission:  At Troost Elementary School, our teachers, administrators, and staff strive to provide the best culture and environment each day for every student and their parents. As one of Kansas City Public School's K-6 grade neighborhood schools, we work diligently to provide academic assistance for every student in our school.
Locations: 1215 E. 59th St. Kansas City, MO 64110
Activities: Available positions include lunch and recess monitors, student tutoring/test proctor, clerical and secretarial assistance, teacher assistant, and hall monitors.
Hours needed: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.; lunch monitor 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Orientation: Training is offered on-site

Youth Ambassadors

Mission: Youth Ambassadors is an educational program designed to empower underserved teenage youth with essential life skills, soft job skills, creative expression, and adult mentors, helping them become future community leaders willing and able to work for positive change.
Location: 5809 Michigan Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64130
Hours of Operation: Monday through Saturday; can be negotiated with your schedule.
Activities: Assist Youth Ambassadors' Director-level staff in maintaining an organized work environment. The position will perform basic administrative and communications responsibilities, which will help the organization's overall functioning. This role entails basic clerical work with the possibility of opportunities to participate in the planning of programming, curriculum, and events, based on an individual's strengths.
