One of the primary beliefs at Rockhurst is that we are a community that is FOR and WITH others. We serve our community and beyond, but as people, or companions, who are with them on the journey through life.
We believe in diversity, equity and inclusion and will do our part to create a more just world (read our DEI plan – a roadmap for making inclusion our way of proceeding).
To that end, students at Rockhurst can get involved in these efforts with the following opportunities:
1. Take Action!
There are more than 70 clubs and organizations at Rockhurst and many center around providing a forum that creates awareness and action for a specific endeavor through educational, social and recreational activities. These include the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, UNITY (gay-straight alliance), VOICES for Justice, Black Student Union, Student Organization of Latinos, Asian Cultural Club, Campus Ministry, Rockhurst Respects Life, Service Immersion trips, the Rockhurst Community Center, and others.
2. Learning, Leadership and Service – It’s Who We Are
Rockhurst is “Where Leaders Learn,” though the term leader doesn’t have to mean someone who is in charge of others. A leader is someone who stands up for what’s right and helps others in their respective journeys. Leadership is at the core of our Jesuit traditions of learning, leadership and service. By taking advantage of leadership opportunities and positions in student government, clubs, organizations, classrooms, places of worship, etc., we can be agents for change.
3. Center for Service Learning
The mission of the Center for Service Learning is to empower individuals to take social action, enhancing their sense of meaning and purpose through service-learning and community engagement.
4. Volunteer through Engage Rockhurst
Engage Rockhurst is an information center for service opportunities and community partner information. Looking to volunteer? Check out Engage Rockhurst.
5. Social Justice Events: Produce, Promote, Participate
Rockhurst has a series of social justice and service-related events, from retreats to trips to community engagement activities. Get involved in the planning behind the projects, promoting the projects and/or participating. Some of the events include: Social Justice Week, MLK Day of Service, World Cultures Day, Office of DEI listening sessions, 21-Day Ignatian Racial Equity Challenge, FACTUALITY simulation during New Student Orientation, Know Justice, Know Peace: A Jesuit Antiracism Retreat, Voter Education Values Clarification, Creating a Home for All: Panel Discussion on Race and Justice, MLK Commemoration, etc.
