Rockhurst University Joins in Mourning for Bill Dunn Sr.

Rockhurst University joins the Dunn family in mourning the loss of Bill Dunn Sr., ’46, longtime CEO of JE Dunn Construction, who died May 31 at age 102. The family has maintained deep roots in the Rockhurst University community, with Bill and his late wife, Jean, giving each of their sons the gift of a Jesuit education at Rockhurst.
Most recently, on April 1, the University presented the family with the Rashford-Lyon Award for Leadership and Ethics for their vast contributions to Kansas City and to Rockhurst.
At the time, Rockhurst University President Sandra Cassady, Ph.D., said, “JE Dunn Construction has helped shape the physical and civic landscape of Kansas City and communities across the country. Its work is visible. In skylines and institutions alike, but just as important is the way the company has been led with discipline, long-term vision, and a deep commitment to doing things the right way.”
In addition to developing the silhouette of the city, JE Dunn Construction and the family have left an indelible imprint on the evolving Rockhurst University campus through serving as a valuable partner in the construction of many of its foundational buildings. More recent projects include Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Hall, an academic building; and the Magis Activity Center.
The family’s legacy of service to Rockhurst includes much more than contributions to its physical landscape. Bill Sr. served on the first lay Board of Trustees and remained an honorary trustee throughout his life. He supported numerous Rockhurst capital and comprehensive campaign efforts, including the construction of Arrupe Hall and the renovation of Conway Hall. In addition, he was instrumental in the start-up of the Chillicothe Companions Program, providing education to staff and offenders at the Chillicothe Correctional Center, and the Priest Leadership Formation Program, which provides business and leadership skills to priests in the diocese.
“We are grateful for the long life, steadfast faith and selfless service of our alumnus, friend and partner, Bill Dunn Sr,” said Cassady. “Our city and our University would be much different places had we not been blessed with his time, talents and treasure.”
