Rockhurst University’s Saint Luke’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences will once again expand its specialized nursing certificate offerings with the launch of the Registered Nurse First Assistance program starting in fall 2024.

Designed for registered nurses who qualify for CNOR certification and advanced practice registered nurses to achieve certification for RN first assistant roles, this 12-hour program includes online asynchronous coursework and a three-day on-campus experience where students will learn the hands-on components of expanded operating room nursing, including patient safety, surgical procedures, and suture techniques. The certificate can be completed in one semester.

According to the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses, “the RNFA works in collaboration with the surgeon and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes; utilizes the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the expanded role of RNFA clinical practice; and practices intraoperatively at the direction of the surgeon.”

Demand for RNFA certified nurses is growing both locally and nationwide, according to Barbara Ludwig, Ed.D., director of graduate nursing programs, as hospitals and surgical centers require specialized skills from the nursing professionals on their teams. Rockhurst University’s RNFA is the first such certification program in the Kansas City area.

“Across health care, more providers are requiring first assistant certification for RNs and APRNs in the operating room,” she said. “Our RNFA certification is perfect for nurses ready to take on greater responsibilities as part of the team of care in these settings. We are proud to be a leader in Kansas City in offering this certification and proud to offer this program with the Jesuit approach of Rockhurst University, emphasizing whole-person care and compassion.”
