After making the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life and completing the Ignatian Foundations courses (Dynamics of Living the Spiritual Exercises and Practices and Guidelines for Living the Spiritual Exercises) with the Ignatian Spirituality Center of Kansas City, you may apply to become an Ignatian prayer guide.
After completing the center’s Ignatian Contemplative Listening course, prayer guides can begin facilitating our short guided prayer experiences (group and individual) or continue training to guide others through the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life.
What the Training Involves
Training to guide others through the Spiritual Exercises consists of a two-year mentoring program followed by three years of peer supervision. The training is highly practical: trainee guides give the Spiritual Exercises to a retreatant and receive ongoing support, learning and skills development from a mentor.
- First year of mentoring — weekly meetings with a mentor; a written verbatim is required each week
- Second year of mentoring — meetings every two to three weeks, as determined by the mentor and guide
- Years three through five — peer supervision
When Does Training Begin?
Prayer guide training begins each summer, in July and August, to prepare for giving the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life or shorter retreats in the fall.
Cost
Prayer guide training is free. Prayer guides volunteer with the Ignatian Spirituality Center.
