"Why Advocacy Still Matters: A Talk with APTA MO President Wendy Nall, PT"
Physical therapy in Missouri stands at a crossroads where advocacy must move beyond defending against threats and toward shaping the future of health care. With direct access secured, the next step is to expand the PT scope to include ordering imaging, laboratory tests, and prescribing non-narcotic medications—especially critical in rural areas where physician shortages can delay care. National policy momentum, such as the Rural Health Transformation Program, underscores the importance of empowering non-physician providers to expand access, reduce duplication, and strengthen patient-centered care. Missouri PTs are uniquely positioned to step into this role as consistent, trusted providers who can improve outcomes while lowering costs.
For APTA Missouri, this means adopting a proactive agenda that embraces legislative advocacy, grassroots engagement, mentorship, and financial support for PAC and legal defense efforts. Advocacy is not optional—it is our shared responsibility and professional duty. By uniting around a vision of PTs as primary care entry points, we can ensure our profession remains independent, respected, and central to the future of healthcare. Missouri PTs must not only protect what we have built but also commit to leading change that delivers sustainable, accessible, and patient-centered healthcare for all communities.
