The Interprofessional Education Committee of Rockhurst University's Saint Luke's College of Nursing and Health Sciences is hosting the SWiTCHED Adapted Toy Build, 11:30-2 on July 11.
The Toy Build has become a favorite activity for students from OT, PT, SLP, Exercise Science and Nursing to work together to adapt toys for use by kids with different needs. This event requires collaboration with the folks from SWiTCHED Adapted Toys based out of Columbia. The team brings their tools and expertise to the event to support the students in adapting toys to be operable by using switches. In years past, toys were either purchased with limited grant funding or donated through internal toy drives.
This year, RU is excited to partner with the Odin George Foundation, a local not-for-profit that Odin’s family founded in his memory. They are currently hosting a toy drive and will provide the toys for the July 11 event to celebrate the anniversary of his passing (July 7, 2023). In addition to others that are easily adapted, they have requested a special toy that was Odin’s favorite to be among the options. Odin’s parents and family will attend the event and work alongside the students.
After the build, toys will be donated to various organizations and families in the Kansas City area, including Children’s Mercy Hospital and KCMO schools, for use with children who need alternative ways to play.
