Baseball: Burns posts his 600th victory
Rockhurst defeated Illinois Springfield 5-3 at home on Sunday to give head coach Gary Burns his 600th career victory. Burns, who is in his 19th season at Rockhurst, will be guiding the Hawks into their 14th postseason appearance.
The Hawks, 30-15, finished second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division with a 20-11 conference record. Rockhurst will open play in the GLVC Tournament on Thursday in Evansville, Ind.
Rockhurst rallied from a 3-0 deficit to score three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to win their third game in a row over Springfield. Sunday’s second game was cancelled due to inclement weather with no score in the top of the third.
Jordan Stull drove in two runs with a pair of singles to lead the nine-hit attack. Derrick Jones and Anthony Davis both posted two hits and scored two runs. T.J. Dailey singled to tie the score in the fifth, while the winning run scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. Thomas Woodard (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Nick Lichtenberger.
