Religion Scholar and Author to Present "A People's History of Christianity"
Diana Butler Bass, Ph.D., will deliver the Rev. William Rossner, S.J., Lecture in Theology, “A People’s History of Christianity,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, in Mabee Theater as part of Rockhurst University’s Visiting Scholar Lecture Series.
Bass, a renowned religion scholar and writer, will base her talk on her book A People’s History of Christianity: The Other Side of the Story. Bass asserts that most important and notable theological changes are driven by lay people who set the stage for intellectual leaders to articulate the theological transformations taking place in the pews and on the streets.
Bass’ books include Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening and the best-selling Christianity for the Rest of Us, named one of the best religion books of the year by Publishers Weekly and featured as a cover story in USA Today.
Bass regularly comments about religion, politics and culture in Time, Newsweek and The Washington Post and on CNN, FOX, PBS and NPR. From 1995 to 2000, she wrote a weekly column about American religion for the New York Times syndicate.
Bass is a Chabraja Fellow with the Seabury NEXT project at Seabury Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. She earned her doctorate from Duke University.
