Christopher Hasse, ’10, has been selected as one of only five fellows in the prestigious Mayo Clinic Administrative Fellowship Program.

Hasse is pursuing an MBA with a healthcare leadership concentration at the Helzberg School of Management, in addition to playing on the Rockhurst University men’s basketball team.

To be considered for the fellowship, he had to complete a paper application, a phone interview and a three-day visit to the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minn. He competed against hundreds of other applicants and was selected over numerous students from larger universities.

After Hasse graduates in May, he will join the Mayo Clinic team in Jacksonville, Fla., in July. He will rotate through various administrative departments and work on several major projects throughout the course of his two-year fellowship.

Hasse has been interested in a healthcare profession for quite a while. At 15 years old, he became intimately familiar with healthcare when he underwent surgery on his ACL.

“I had to go see a specialist,” Hasse said. “He would not let me be afraid. I learned that healthcare is the ultimate service industry. It carries the awesome responsibility of making a difference in people’s lives.”

Once he got to Rockhurst, he realized his strengths were in business administration, but that did not curb his interest in healthcare. He was encouraged by HSOM professors with healthcare and service backgrounds. He has also gained real-world experience at Truman Medical Centers in Kansas City, where he has an internship working with the vice president of community engagement and several other executive staff members.

“In healthcare administration, I can help others on a daily basis by supporting the team,” he said.

With his internship experiences and Mayo Clinic fellowship, Hasse is well on his way to pursing his goal of becoming a hospital CEO. For now, he says he is just “excited to learn from one of the best.”
