Carolers Spread Christmas Cheer Across Campus

There are several clues that Christmas is right around the corner. The mornings are chilly, an abundance of arboreal adornments and more than 20 Rockhurst University students, faculty and staff belting out Christmas tunes.

On Thursday, these wassailers paraded around campus decking the halls of McGee, Van Ackeren, Sedgwick, Conway and Massman halls with their Christmas carols.

The carolers sang such yuletide classics as “Silent Night,” “Up On the House Top,” and contemporary holiday songs like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You.” 

It’s been very popular with the students,” Maureen Henderson, director of campus ministries said. “They just wanted to share a little bit of Christmas with Rockhurst before they have to go back home.”

The afternoon’s festivities also included a visit from Santa Claus, a lip-synced performance and an ugly sweater contest.

Kim Becvar, senior for St. Louis, won the contest with her Merry Christmas teddy bear sweater. Although she was happy to receive a stuffed Rock E. Hawk as a prize, she was more excited about getting to sing.

 “It really put us in the Christmas spirit,” Becvar said. “It’s such a fun Rockhurst tradition.”
