Men's Soccer: Hawks rally for 3-2 overtime win in NCAA Midwest Regional
Paolo Scoppola scored his seventh goal of the season with 2:49 remaining in overtime to give fourth-ranked Rockhurst a 3-2 victory over 25th-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio) in a second-round game in the NCAA Midwest Regional Sunday at RU's Bourke Field.
Rockhurst scored two goals in the final 12 minutes in regulation to force overtime. Ruben Perez scored on a header in the 79th minute and Sean Verbanic tied the score with a penalty kick in the 87th minute. All three of Rockhurst’s goals were scored after its leading scorer, Mark Magee, was issued a red card in the 51st minute.
Erik Beattie and Renan Trocolli scored Notre Dame’s goals 64 seconds apart at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half. The Falcons end the season with a 15-6-0 record.
Top-seeded Rockhurst, 18-2-2, advances to face second-seeded Saginaw Valley State in the NCAA Midwest Regional title game in Tahlequah, Okla., on Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. Saginaw Valley State advanced with a shootout win over Quincy on Sunday.
