Women’s Basketball: Hawks drop opener to Newman
Newman rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Rockhurst 64-59 in the Hawks’ season opener Saturday at RU’s Mason-Halpin Field House.
The Hawks opened the second half on a 14-6 run to take a 42-32 lead with 13:53 left in the game. Newman proceeded to score the next nine points and grabbed its first lead at 45-44 at the 9:07 mark. Rockhurst retook the lead on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Kendall Hart. Newman closed the game on a 17-10 run.
Hart led the Hawks with 17 points behind five-of-10 shooting from behind the 3-point line. Senior forward Kara McFarland posted 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Allison Streich added 13 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Freshman guard Kayla Hall added five assists.
The Hawks, 0-1, host Baker on Friday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.
