Lecturer Connects Religious Identity and Modern Art

The Rev. Terrence Dempsey, S.J., founding director of the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art in St. Louis, will present "Creating a Religious Environment Through Contemporary Art and Architecture" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in Mabee Theater on the Rockhurst campus.

Celebrating his 25th year as a Jesuit priest, Fr. Dempsey will discuss the nature and purpose of modern religious art and its role in creating a spiritual environment in today's world. His presentation will provide insights into the relationship between religious identity and the visual arts.

Fr. Dempsey holds the May O'Rourke Professorship of Art History and Religion at Saint Louis University. The Museum of Contemporary Religious Art features work from various faith traditions and is among the first such institutions in the world to focus exclusively on the role of contemporary visual arts in creating and sustaining a spiritual environment.
