The Helzberg School of Management at Rockhurst University, in partnership with the American Marketing Association of Kansas City’s Healthcare Special Interest Group, co-hosted Helzberg on Healthcare Friday, Oct. 19, on the Rockhurst campus. The event featured two acclaimed speakers: Kent Seltman, marketing division chair emeritus for Mayo Clinic, and Mark Laney, M.D., president and CEO of Heartland Health in St. Joseph, Mo.

Seltman, co-author of Management Lessons from Mayo Clinic: Inside One of the World’s Most Admired Service Organizations, reviewed insights from his book and discussed how Mayo Clinic implements and maintains customer expectations, adheres to its brand management system, and executes its care model to meet patient service needs. Laney discussed Heartland Health’s move to a more outpatient, holistic focus in order to build a system that works to provide seamless medical care.

“These were two very different speakers who each had a lot to offer attendees,” said James Dockins, Ed.D., FACHE, assistant professor of healthcare leadership at Rockhurst’s Helzberg School of Management. “Rockhurst is hosting quarterly Helzberg on Healthcare events, with the goal of providing a forum that promotes timely health management education for our students and the region’s healthcare provider community.”

This marked the second Helzberg on Healthcare event for Rockhurst. The first was held on July 20, 2012, and included a panel of speakers discussing topics such as Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as well as Patient-Centered Medical Homes.

“I helped coordinate the panel of speakers for the first event,” said Josh Weir, third-year student in Rockhurst’s dual-degree DO/MBA program – a program offered jointly with Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB).

Weir, who earned his bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in business administration from Truman State University, says events like this are invaluable to him.

“They showcase the business and leadership sides of healthcare,” he said. “They expose students to the latest topics, and allow us to build connections with prospective DO/MBA students, alumni and community members. Through opportunities like this both in-class and outside the classroom, this program has equipped me with an arsenal of tools to not only become an outstanding physician, but a leader in the healthcare community.”
