Men’s Soccer: Rockhurst moves into first place

The 16th-ranked Rockhurst Hawks moved into first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 2-1 victory at Missouri S&T Sunday in Rolla, Mo.

Rockhurst, 13-2-2 overall and 11-2-1 in the GLVC, can wrap up the regular season conference title with a win in their final regular season game at William Jewell Wednesday night.

Junior midfielder Paolo Scoppola scored the winning goal for the Hawks on a header in the 72nd minute.  Junior forward Mark Magee scored in the 48th minute to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Magee is the GLVC leader in points (32), and co-leader in goals (12) and game-winning goals (5). He ranks in the top 10 in NCAA Division II in points, assists and goals. Rockhurst head coach Tony Tocco now has 613 career wins. Tocco ranks No. 2 on the career win list for all levels of intercollegiate men’s college soccer coaches.

On Friday, Magee scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season to lead Rockhurst to a 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked Drury at RU’s Bourke Field. Magee scored in the 57th minute on a shot from 12 yards out into an open net with assists from Sean Verbanic and Nick McDonald.

The Hawks outshot Drury 13-6. Magee led Rockhurst with five shots. Verbanic added four shots. Ryan Bass stopped one shot to post his league-high eighth shutout of the season.
