Men’s Soccer: No. 16 Hawks fall at Southern Indiana
Southern Indiana scored three goals in a 14-minute span to upset the 16th-ranked Rockhurst Hawks 3-2 Sunday in Evansville, Ind. The Hawks, 9-2-2 overall, are now tied for third place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 7-2-1 record. Rockhurst next faces McKendree at home on Friday.
Jeffrey McClure tallied all three of USI's goals. He tied the score at 1-1 in the 42nd minute. He scored his next two goals early in the second half to give the Screaming Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Sean Verbanic gave Rockhurst a 1-0 lead with an assist from Paolo Scoppola at the 37:45 mark. Scoppola cut USI's lead to 3-2 with a goal assisted by Mark Magee at the 60:06 mark. Magee led the Hawks with four shots. Scoppola added three shots. RU goalkeeper Ryan Bass made four saves.
On Friday, Magee collected three goals to direct Rockhurst to a 6-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro, Ky. Magee scored his first two goals in the first six minutes and two seconds of the game. His third goal gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead at the 15:33 mark of the first half. He leads the team with eight goals and 24 points.
Nick McDonald and Verbanic added goals in the first half to give the Hawks a 5-0 halftime lead. Keith Williams capped the scoring with a goal in the 73rd minute. Lucas De Rossi finished with a pair of assists. The Hawks outshot the Panthers 48-4. Verbanic led Rockhurst with nine shots. John Merlo, De Rossi and Williams each added five shots. Bass and Eric Stanowski combined for the shutout while only facing one shot.
