Women’s Soccer: Hawks remain in first place
Sophomore forward Caroline Brandt scored on a shot from 15 yards out with 1:37 left in overtime to give Rockhurst a 2-1 win over Illinois Springfield on Sunday at RU's Bourke Field. The 19th-ranked Hawks are in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 7-0-1 record.
The Hawks rallied to tie the score at 1-1 on goal in the 57th minute from Taylor Skala, who knocked in a 10-yard shot assisted by Brandt and Jessica Bayens. Jessica Cook and Paige Sielfleisch collected assists on Brandt's game-winning goal. The Hawks outshot Springfield 24-3, while posting nine shots on goal.
On Friday, Rockhurst took over first place in the GLVC with a 2-0 victory over seventh-ranked Quincy at Bourke Field. Senior goalkeeper Lucy Sullivan posted her fifth shutout of the season while making one save. She leads the GLVC in goals against average (0.43), and is the conference co-leader in shutouts.
Haley Long opened the scoring with a 10-yard shot into the back right corner of the net in the 11th minute. Katie Kujawa and Kasey Lierz assisted on the goal. Skala added an insurance goal with 11:04 left in the game. Skala knocked in a shot from six yards out with assists from Kujawa and Long.
Rockhurst will take an 8-0-1 overall record into a Friday match at Kentucky Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
