Men’s Soccer: Rockhurst posts 5-1 victory
Sophomore forward Lucas De Rossi assisted on four goals to lead Rockhurst to a 5-1 victory over Illinois Springfield on Sunday at RU's Bourke Field. The win vaulted the 25th-ranked Hawks into a tie for first place with Drury at 6-1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Jake Grimes scored his first goal of the season, with an assist from De Rossi, to give Rockhurst a 1-0 halftime lead. The Hawks scored three goals in less than six minutes early in the second half to take a 4-0 lead. Nick McDonald and Mark Magee scored their fifth goals of the year, while Ruben Perez headed in his first goal of the season. Keith Williams capped the scoring with a goal in the 65th minute, off passes from De Rossi and John Mehl.
The Hawks outshot Springfield 38-7. Magee paced Rockhurst with 10 shots. McDonald, Williams and Sean Verbanic each posted four shots. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Bass finished with two saves. He is the co-leader in shutouts (5) and save percentage (.857) in the GLVC.
On Friday, Rockhurst held sixth-ranked Quincy scoreless for 110 minutes at Bourke Field, but the Hawks had to settle for 0-0 tie. Bass posted his fifth shutout of the season while stopping three Quincy shots. The Hawks outshot Quincy 23-10, including 8-1 in the two 10-minute overtime periods. Magee led Rockhurst with four shots. Verbanic and John Merlo added three shots apiece.
Rockhurst takes a 7-1-2 overall record into a Tuesday match at Truman State at 4:00 p.m.
