Men’s Soccer: Rockhurst blanks Maryville, 1-0
Sophomore midfielder Austin Tierney's goal in the 58th minute gave the fifth-ranked Rockhurst Hawks a 1-0 victory over Maryville on Sunday in St. Louis. Tierney scored his second goal of the season off a cross from Mark Magee.
Rockhurst outshot the Saints 13-7. Magee and Sean Verbanic led the Hawks with three shots each. Ryan Bass stopped three Maryville shots in posting his fourth shutout of the season.
The Hawks, 6-1-1, are currently in second place in the GLVC with a 5-1 league record. Rockhurst will host GLVC leader Quincy on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Hawks suffered their first loss in 369 days, falling to Missouri-St. Louis 1-0 in overtime Friday night in St. Louis. The loss ended the fifth-ranked Hawks’ 23-game unbeaten streak, which is tied for the 11th longest streak in NCAA Division II history.
Rockhurst finished the 2011 season with a 14-0-3 record and started out the 2012 season with a 5-0-1 record. The school record for consecutive games without a loss is 24, accomplished during the 1981 and ’82 seasons.
Senior defender Thomas Mihalczo scored his first goal of the season with 1:23 to play in overtime to prevent the Hawks from tying the school record. Mihaclzo headed the ball into the net off a pass from senior midfielder Ajdin Dedic for the game-winning goal as UMSL improves to 4-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in GLVC.
The Hawks finished with 15 shots, while UMSL collected eight shots. Magee and Nick McDonald led the Hawks with four shots apiece. Bass made two saves.
