Men’s Soccer: Magee lifts Hawks past Indianapolis
Junior forward Mark Magee scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lift 15th-ranked Rockhurst to a 3-2 victory at Indianapolis on Sunday. Magee's game-winning goal came with 8:57 left in the game on a shot from just inside the box.
Magee, who led the Hawks with six shots, also scored the first goal of the game in the 30th minute with a shot into the left side of the goal. Senior midfielder Ruben Perez assisted on both of Magee's goals. Sophomore midfielder Lucas De Rossi tied the score at 2-2 for RU with an amazing bicycle kick from the top of the box in the 79th minute.
Freshman forward Reid Strain scored two goals to give Indianapolis a 2-1 lead midway through the second half. The Greyhounds finished with 11 shots, two less than Rockhurst. Junior keeper Ryan Bass stopped five Indy shots.
Four players netted goals to lead Rockhurst to a 4-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday night in Rensselaer, Ind.
Junior Nick McDonald scored his first goal of the season in the 22nd minute and scored eight minutes later to give Rockhurst a 2-0 halftime lead. Junior Paolo Scoppola drilled a shot from 18 yards out to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead early in the second half. Junior Sean Verbanic scored the final goal in the 82nd minute.
The Hawks, ranked second in the NSCAA Division II Midwest Region poll, outshot the Pumas 19-7 while recording 12 shots on goal. McDonald led Rockhurst with six shots. Magee added three shots. Bass collected six saves.
The Hawks, 3-0-1 and 2-0-0 in the GLVC, return home for their home opener on Friday against Wisconsin-Parkside.
