Men's Soccer: Hawks blank UMKC, 1-0

The Rockhurst Hawks posted their second shutout in two days in blanking Missouri-Kansas City 1-0 Sunday night in the annual “Battle of the Blue” exhibition contest at UMKC’s Durwood Soccer Stadium.

Senior midfielder Ruben Perez scored the lone goal on a header off a free kick by Paolo Scoppola in the 29th minute. The Hawks finished with an 11-8 edge in shots, led by Scoppola with eight shots. RU goalkeeper Ryan Bass stopped three UMKC shots.

The Hawks shut down Baker 3-0 in their first exhibition match Saturday night at Bourke Field. John Merlo scored two goals and freshman Charlie Boehm tallied the third goal. Bass and Eric Stankowski combined for the shutout. Baker is ranked second in the nation in the NAIA pre-season poll.

Rockhurst opens the regular season on Aug. 30 at Benedictine.
