Core Value for 2016-17: Contemplation in Action
Each academic year, Rockhurst University selects one of the six Jesuit core values to serve as its theme. The University’s core value for the 2016-17 academic year, contemplation in action, calls us all to consider how we might commit ourselves to service and leadership in a more complete and deeper way.
Contemplation in action is the lens through which we respond to the challenges and opportunities we see in the world around us. This particular value inspires us to tackle problems big and small each day with a sense of creativity and thoughtfulness in order to bring ourselves closer to our own true potential and closer to God.
St. Ignatius of Loyola long ago set the guidelines for “Ignatian conversation” that we follow today — to be slow to speak, to listen attentively, to seek the truth in what others are saying, to disagree humbly, respectfully and thoughtfully, and to allow the conversation the time it needs. That openness is central to the Jesuit understanding of contemplation in action, as well. We seek to always foster openness and curiosity about new and different things. We view those around us, whether colleague or stranger, with a spirit of trust, hopefulness, collegiality and dialogue. We value different points of view and the full range of human experiences.
In this academic year, we encourage students, faculty and staff to focus on using their gifts and talents in the service of others and to contemplate how they can become agents of change and transformation in the areas of social justice and equality in the true spirit of the Jesuit core values and of contemplation in action.
From student reflections throughout the year to a Sept. 26 Visiting Scholar lecture by lawyer, business executive and writer Tom Gallagher on the impact of contemplation in action in the work of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Rockhurst University will higlight contemplation in action in a number of ways throughout the 2016-17 academic year.
