Rockhurst University Prepares for 94th Commencement Activities
Almost 700 undergraduate and graduate-level students will receive degrees during Rockhurst University’s annual commencement activities May 16-17.
Students receiving degrees include 400 undergraduates, among them the graduates of the Rockhurst-affiliated Research College of Nursing, and 285 graduate-level students.
Beginning with a procession at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, the graduating class will gather to receive their degrees in front of friends, family and members of the University community at the 94thcommencement ceremony in Municipal Auditorium, 301 W. 13th St. in Kansas City, Missouri.
Two students have been chosen to deliver reflections during the ceremony: Quentin Savwoir, a Kansas City native who graduated from Paseo Academy in 2004 and will receive degrees in communications and political science, represents the undergraduate students; and Caitlin Flournoy, an Overland Park, Kansas, native and former researcher at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research who will receive a master’s degree in secondary education to begin a second career teaching high school science, will deliver remarks on behalf of graduate students.
University President the Rev. Thomas B. Curran will present the Senior Gold Medal to the highest ranked student in the graduating class.
Following the ceremony, the freshly minted graduates and their friends and family members will take part in the Hawk Walk, marching from Municipal Auditorium to an area between Main and Walnut on 14th Street in Kansas City’s Power and Light District for a post-commencement celebration.
Another traditional component of commencement, the annual Baccalaureate Mass, takes place on Friday, May 16. Students and faculty will process at 1:45 p.m. from campus to St. Francis Xavier Church, 1001 E. 52nd St. in Kansas City, Missouri, where the Mass will begin at 2 p.m. A reception on the University’s Kinerk Commons will follow at 3 p.m.
