Baseball: Hawks eliminated from GLVC Tournament
The Rockhurst Hawks were eliminated from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament by 17th-ranked Indianapolis behind a no-hitter from junior right-hander Phil Wheeler Saturday night at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind.
Wheeler shut down the Hawks while striking out 11 and walking six in Indy’s 3-0 win to move the Greyhounds, 41-14, into Sunday’s GLVC championship game. Rockhurst, 32-17, will await the NCAA Division II Tournament pairings late Sunday night.
The Hawks also suffered a 3-2 loss to Indianapolis earlier on Saturday. Rockhurst was held to five hits by three Indy pitchers. Senior first baseman Ryan Porter brought the Hawks to within a run with a two-run triple with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Indy struck out the last two hitters to end the game.
Indianapolis scored all three of its runs with the help of two errors in the seventh. Rockhurst starter Zach Loeffelholz (2-3) only allowed five hits in six-plus innings of work. Patrick Chandler collected two of the Hawks’ five hits.
