Baseball: Hawks win opener in GLVC Tournament
Junior right-hander Mark Sappington struck out 12 hitters to lead Rockhurst to a 3-1 win over Quincy in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday in Evansville, Ind.
Sappington (9-3) held Quincy to three hits over nine innings. Quincy scored an unearned run in the sixth to break up the shutout. Sappington, who lowered his ERA to 1.55, has 96 strikeouts in 87 innings this season.
Rockhurst scored three unearned runs in the fifth. Anthony Davis singled to open the inning and scored on a passed ball. Jordan Stull and Patrick Chandler both scored on a throwing error by the Quincy shortstop. Brandon Tangney and Davis led the Hawks with two hits apiece.
The Hawks, 31-15, will play Lewis or Indianapolis on Friday at 11 a.m. on the second day of the tournament.
