Mozart’s Requiem Caps Musica Sacra’s 20th Concert Season
Four of Kansas City’s finest professional vocalists will join Musica Sacra Chorus and Orchestra to crown the Rockhurst University ensemble-in-residence’s 20th anniversary season with a performance of Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 52nd Street and Troost Avenue.
Soprano Rebecca Lloyd is well known in the region for her performances with the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, and the Bach Aria Soloists. Mezzo-soprano Un-Chong Christopher has graced the opera and oratorio stage and is Lloyd’s colleague in the Bach Aria Soloists. Tenor Jacob Sentgeorge and baritone Chad Flynn have been active in operatic and concert performances in the United States and abroad.
The Requiem remains one of the most popular and profound works for chorus, vocal soloists and orchestra. Even the orchestration adds to the unique flavor of the music. Rather than scoring the winds with traditional flutes and oboes, Mozart chose basset horns (the closely related clarinets are usually used today), which adds a darker and more somber color to the music.
Tickets for Musica Sacra Chorus and Orchestra are $18 for adults, $12 for students and senior adults, and are available by calling the Central Ticket Office, (816) 235-6222, by logging ontowww.rockhurst.edu/mstickets. or by purchase at the church before the performance. Conductor and Music Director Timothy McDonald, Ph.D., will present “Live Program Notes” at 6:15 p.m.
