Rockhurst University Names Key Member of Leadership Team
Rockhurst University has named Sharon M. Homan, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs effective July 1, 2011.
Homan currently serves as vice president for public health at Kansas Health Institute, an independent, nonprofit health policy and research organization. She holds a Ph.D. in biostatistics and a master’s degree in preventive medicine and environmental health from the University of Iowa. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Quincy College, with a double major in biology and chemistry and minors in theology and mathematics.
Prior to joining KHI, Homan served at Saint Louis University from 1982-2008 in various administrative and faculty roles. Her areas of expertise include statistical methods and evaluation, maternal and child health and mental health. Her mental health research focuses on substance abuse, family violence and homelessness.
“Dr. Homan’s extensive experience in Jesuit higher education, health care and community issues matches well the core values of Rockhurst University,” said Rockhurst University President the Rev. Thomas B. Curran, O.S.F.S. “We look forward to her leadership as we seek to provide a superior overall environment for our students.”
The VPAA is a member of the university’s senior leadership team and has oversight of all aspects of the academic experience at Rockhurst. The deans of the four major academic units report to the VPAA, along with the registrar and the directors of the library, the Center for Service Learning and the Honors Program. In addition, the VPAA serves as co-chairperson of the University Planning and Budget Committee.
Homan replaces William Haefele, Ph.D., who stepped down from the VPAA position after serving for 10 years to return to teaching.
