Tennis: Women finish third at GLVC Tournament
L-R: All-GLVC Tennis honorees Karsyn Betts, John Lazenby, Yassir El Ghazi, Maureen RielleyThe 50th-ranked Rockhurst women’s tennis team defeated Northern Kentucky 5-0 in the third-place match in the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Saturday in Springfield, Mo. The Hawks, 12-3, await Tuesday’s NCAA Division II Tournament announcement.
Rockhurst swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. The Hawks wrapped up the victory with wins from Erin Bales and Alex Schelble in No. 3 and 4 singles. Senior Maureen Rielley, who teamed with Bales to win No. 1 doubles 8-4, was leading her No. 1 singles match 6-2, 3-0 when the Hawks clinched the match.
The Hawks opened the GLVC Tournament on Friday with a 5-0 win over Indianapolis in the quarterfinals. Lewis edged Rockhurst, 5-3, in Friday’s semifinals as the Flyers went to defeat Drury in Saturday’s championship match.
Rielley and junior Karsyn Betts were named to the All-GLVC Women’s Tennis Team at Thursday night’s tournament banquet.
Juniors John Lazenby and Yassir El Ghazi received All-GLVC Men’s Tennis Team honors. The Rockhurst men’s team finished the season with a 9-4 record after falling to Lewis, 5-3, in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament on Friday in Springfield, Mo.
