KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An innovative new partnership between Rockhurst University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City will allow students enrolled at Rockhurst to receive an engineering or information technology degree.

The Engineering, Computing and Information Technology program is now accepting applications for fall enrollment.

“This partnership enables both universities to extend their reach by sharing resources in a way that benefits students and the greater good of Kansas City,” said Rockhurst President the Rev. Thomas B. Curran. “When students graduate from our program, not only will they have the technical knowledge to compete, they will be prepared to think critically, communicate effectively and lead others.”

Kansas City is a major engineering center, home to numerous civil infrastructure design/construction and engineering/manufacturing firms with national and international reputations.

“Having two prestigious Kansas City universities partner to increase the pool of qualified engineering and information technology professionals will be a huge asset to local and regional employers,” said Greg Graves, chairman and CEO of Burns and McDonnell and a Rockhurst University board member. “The heavy concentration of firms located in Kansas City should also be a benefit to students while they are in the program and upon graduation.”

UMKC offers the only ABET-accredited engineering program in Kansas City.

“Together, UMKC and Rockhurst University will make significant contributions to the local and regional workforce by preparing the next generation of engineering and information technology professionals,” said UMKC Chancellor Leo E. Morton. “We’re excited to build this program on the strengths of both universities and we believe this crossing of Troost Avenue will create a synergy that will enliven the learning communities on both sides of the street.”

The new program allows students to combine the Rockhurst University experience of higher education in the Jesuit, liberal arts tradition with professional and career opportunities in the field of engineering. Students will take courses in the Rockhurst core curriculum plus physics and math at Rockhurst and specialized engineering courses at UMKC.

Students in the new program will be able to select from five bachelor of science degree options: civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science and information technology.
