Baseball: Sappington leads Hawks past Missouri S&T
Junior right-hander Mark Sappington won his sixth game of the season and struck out a season-high 12 hitters over seven innings to lead Rockhurst to a 7-1 win over 12th-ranked Missouri S&T in the second game of a conference doubleheader Monday in Rolla, Mo.
Sappington (6-2) held the Miners to five hits without issuing a walk. Missouri S&T scored an unearned run with two outs in the seventh to break up the shutout. Sappington, who lowered his ERA to 1.86, has 68 strikeouts in 58 innings this season.
Rockhurst scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. Ryan Porter added a three-run double in the seventh. Jordan Stull led the eight-hit attack with a pair of singles. Stull also posted two hits in a 9-2 loss to the Miners in the first game.
The Hawks, 20-13 and 11-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, play a conference doubleheader at noon Wednesday at William Jewell.
