Baseball: Hawks explode for 17-2 victory
Patrick Chandler went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Rockhurst to a 17-2 victory over Maryville in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Loyola Park. The Saints rallied to win the first game, 6-4.
The Hawks scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the first inning. Chandler, Ryan Porter and T.J. Dailey each collected two hits in the opening frame. Chandler and Porter posted run-scoring doubles, while Dailey drove in two runs with a triple. Pat Burns collected three hits in his first start of the season at second base. Third baseman Andrew Watts added two hits off the bench. Zach Loeffelholz (1-3) was the winning pitcher.
In the first game, Maryville scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead. The Hawks put the tying runs on base on the final inning. Brandon Tangney and Jordan Stull both finished with three hits.
On Friday, Rockhurst exploded for 19 runs on 27 hits in sweeping Maryville, 11-4 and 8-3. Stull went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game. Sean Carter added three hits and two RBIs. Mark Sappington (5-2) held the Saints to four hits in seven innings. Bradbury led the Hawks in the second game with four hits and three RBIs. Mark Himmelberg (4-1) pitched five innings to get the win.
The Hawks (18-12, 10-8 GLVC) play a single game at Northwest Missouri State on Tuesday (3 p.m.), April 10.
