Greenlease Gallery Exhibit Focuses on Mystical Agents, Art
“Celestial Terrestrials: Between Heaven and Earth,” a group exhibition curated by Elisabeth J. Kirsch, will open with a 6:30 p.m. curatorial talk by Kirsch followed by a 7-9 p.m. reception Friday, Oct. 21 in the Greenlease Gallery.
From prehistoric cave painting, to guardian figures on African reliquaries, to countless statues of saints and angels, to the pop culture superheroes and heroines, artwork has depicted how humans have sought help from spirit guides. The exhibition brings together paintings, works on paper, sculpture and videos by 20 contemporary artists from Kansas City and around the country who deal with the complex subject of supernatural intermediaries. There will also be objects from the Americas, Africa and Asia.
Kirsch has worked as a contemporary art curator, administrator, historian and critic in New York City and Kansas City since 1976.
The Greenlease Gallery is located between Van Ackeren and Sedgwick halls on the Rockhurst University campus, 54th Street and Troost Avenue. The exhibition continues through Dec. 3. The gallery is open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. For more information, contact Greenlease Gallery Director at (816) 501-4407.
