Baseball: Hawks post 5-2 win at Washburn
Junior right-hander Mark Sappington won his second consecutive impressive start to lead Rockhurst to a 5-2 victory over Washburn on Wednesday in Topeka, Kan. Sappington struck out 11 hitters without issuing a walk over six innings. He held the Ichabods to two hits and one unearned run. He has 18 strikeouts and zero walks in 12 innings with a 0.00 ERA this season.
Senior catcher T.J. Dailey and senior shortstop Anthony Davis combined for four hits and three RBIs. Dailey tripled home a run in the first inning and added a run-scoring single in the seventh inning. Davis gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the second.
Senior third baseman Scott Bradbury drove home Dailey with a single to right field in the first. A one-out single by Sean Carter set up the Hawks’ final run in the eighth. Pinch runner Kirk Huismann scored the final run on a wild pitch. Josh Tols pitched the final three innings to pick up his second save.
Rockhurst, 2-1, travels to Florida this weekend to play in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Hawks play Saginaw Valley State in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 4.
