Two Rockhurst Food Options Receive City Honor

Planet Sub and Daily Grind – both operated by Sodexo Campus Services at Rockhurst University - were awarded the 2010 Grade A Food Excellence Award by the Kansas City Health Department.

Only 160 food service establishments qualified for the award, putting the Rockhurst eateries in the top 5 percent of all restaurants in the city.

The award is based on excellence in sanitation and food safety, as well as evidence of successful employee education. At Rockhurst, dining services holds monthly training sessions for its employees. This regular interaction made everyone more aware of their responsibilities and the importance of food safety, said Mike Johnson, general manager of Sodexo Campus Services at Rockhurst University.

Another important part of the effort at Rockhurst is the partnership between dining services and physical plant.

“The physical plant staff are invaluable partners in resolving facilities issues,” Johnson said. “Their work repairing and replacing equipment in a timely manner makes it easier to maintain a safe environment.”

The efforts of all these staff members lead to one outcome – safety.

“Being selected for this award is a great reminder that our food is prepared in a safe manner,” Johnson said.

Planet Sub and Daily Grind, the University’s coffee shop, are located in the Rock Room on the lower level of Massman Hall.
