Black Heritage Month

Black History Month is fully under way at Rockhurst University.

Throughout February, RU’s Black Student Union will be playing host to events on campus to commemorate the celebratory month.

D’Angela Sims, Kansas City, Mo., junior and vice president of the BSU, said it was important for the University to celebrate Black History month because, “there are so many influential people within African-American culture that have made significant imprints on American history. Those people should be recognized and the Rockhurst community should be educated. It could change so many perceptions of African-Americans as a whole.”

All month long, the organization will be holding a trivia raffle asking students to identify nationally and locally famous African-Americans. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, the BSU will hold a bake sale in Massman Hall. At 5 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 12, they will also hold a soul food dinner at the Fishbowl for only $3. The food will be provided by locally-owned Lutfi’s or Mad Jacks.

Sims said the proceeds from all of these events will be donated to the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation.

Sims said the BSU chose this foundation because, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Sickle Cell Anemia disproportionately affects the black community.
