Visiting Scholars: Thomas Madden
Thomas Madden, Ph.D., will present his lecture “The Crusades in Myth and History” as part of the Visiting Scholar Lecture Series, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in Mabee Theater.
Madden has been involved with many important studies about the Crusades. His scholarship has earned him fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The medieval crusades have been interpreted differently throughout time, ranging from apologies to condemnations. Medieval Europe considered crusades to be ideal armed pilgrimages fought in the name of Christ.
Much of the 20th-century Crusades scholarship has dealt with the acts as unjustified and aggressive. Recent scholarship, however, has begun taking a different approach.
Madden, a leading scholar in the field, explores the myth and the reality to find the historical truth in the Crusades.
The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. To register your attendance, call 816-501-4828. Mabee Theater is located in Sedgwick Hall on the Rockhurst University campus, 54th Street and Troost Avenue.
