You’ve seen them around campus or in class, and you finally get the nerve to ask them out. Things go well and eventually you both decide that you’re in a relationship! Incredibly exciting, I know, but college relationships can be tricky, so here are some tips for you both.
Learn to Prioritize
Of course, your relationship is important, and both of you will need to make time for each other, but you also need to make time for your classes and work. It can be tempting to skip your homework for the night or not study for that test because you want to be free the same nights as your significant other, but you came to college for the schooling first and connections second. You will find time to be together but manufacturing it out of time that should be spent on schoolwork is a recipe for disaster for everyone involved.
Be Conscious of Others
It is exhilarating to be in a new relationship, and especially when you have classes together and are on campus at the same time a lot, you’re going to be with your significant other a lot. The key is to not get too mushy-gushy out in public. There is nothing wrong with holding hands as you walk together, chatting and being cute on a bench, or saying a sweet hello and goodbye. The problem is when hands are held in high-traffic areas and take up the whole sidewalk, taking up a whole table with lovey-dovey kisses, and generally pushing your affection into the faces of everyone around you. Not everyone gets what you’re feeling, and it can range from annoying to gross, so find a nice space for just the two of you to tell each other what you’re feeling.
Have Fun
College is one of the few times where you’re around friends all the time, and the same thing goes for relationships. When you graduate, you’ll both be going to work and be tired when you get home. Take advantage of the time you both have now to do little things here and there throughout your day! Have lunch, go on a walk, and create little date nights around your living spaces or campus. There are so many great campus activities that are perfect for couples to attend together, and you may not always have that set up for you two.
