It’s not easy to take classes online, but you’re not going through this alone. People have been taking online classes for decades and both students and teachers alike have gotten better with them over this past year. Here are some tips to give you a leg up.
Take it seriously. Without the physical classroom, it can feel like this class isn’t as important as others, but both you and your GPA know that’s not true. Make sure that when you’re in lecture you take diligent notes, keep your Zoom window open, and the rest of your screen free of distractions. Keep your assignments on a schedule and study for your tests just as you would any other class.
Participation is key. Even though Rockhurst has smaller class sizes compared to most colleges, it can be easy to get lost in the gallery view. Make sure to speak up and answer questions, email or talk to your professor when you’re not sure of something, and talk to your classmates when you have the chance. It’s still a class and you’ll need each other more than you think.
Be flexible. While we’ve all been getting better at this, your professors may still not have everything together. Technical difficulties are an inevitability and patience is key. Timing may be a bit off and the online systems aren’t always as stable or easy to navigate as we want them to be. We’re all working on making this experience better and a bit of flexibility will go a long way.
