Softball: Rockhurst sweeps Quincy
Natalie Johnson homered twice and drove in three runs to lead Rockhurst to a 3-1 win over Quincy in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday in Quincy, Ill. The Hawks (12-21, 9-11 GLVC) completed the sweep with a 3-2 win in the second game.
In the opener, Johnson hit a two-run home run in the first inning and added a solo homer in the sixth. She also singled in the fourth as she finished with all three of Rockhurst's hits. Katie McCune went the distance on the mound for her first win of the season. The Hawks won the second game behind home runs from Lizzy Tucker, Alex Jacobson and Liz Desloge. Kayla Hoyer (9-9) held Quincy to four hits while striking out six.
Rockhurst dropped a pair of games at Illinois Springfield, 1-0 and 8-4, Saturday. Springfield won the first game on a walk-off single with one out in the ninth inning. Hoyer allowed five hits in her eight-plus innings. The Hawks were held to two hits: an eighth-inning double by Sadie Applegate and a ninth-inning single by Amanda Burger.
In the second game, the Prairie Stars scored four runs in the fifth to break a 5-all deadlock. Toya Nelson led the Hawks with three hits. Katelyn Bakey drove in two runs with a first-inning single. Nelson and Jacobson added RBI doubles. Hoyer (8-9) took the loss in relief of starter Megan Holm.
