Women's Tennis: Hawks suffer 5-4 loss at NCAA Regional
The 50th-ranked Rockhurst women’s tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss to Drury in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Championship’s Midwest Regional Monday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. The Hawks end the season with a 12-4 record.
Rockhurst rallied from a 2-1 deficit to tie the match at 4-4 with No. 2 singles left to play. Drury’s Pelagie Gamo defeated RU’s Karsyn Betts 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to put the 22nd-ranked Panthers (19-4) into the Round of 16 in Louisville, Ky., May 16.
The Hawks’ Maureen Rielley won her No. 1 singles match over Drury’s Beatriz Juan 6-1, 6-3. Rockhurst’s Mary Lanaghen and Leigh-Anne Fourie were victorious in No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Mary and Rachel Lanaghen gave the Hawks their lone win in doubles in the No. 3 matchup.
