“Technical Changes That May Profoundly Impact Our Lives for Good or Ill”

Kelly Weinersmith is an adjunct assistant professor of biosciences at Rice University who studies parasites and is the co-author of the book Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That'll Improve and/or Ruin Everything (2017), written with her husband Zach Weinersmith, a cartoonist best known for his webcomic "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal."

Together they have researched cutting-edge technologies and interview scientists. They ask — "What will the world of tomorrow look like? Why hasn't this advancement happened already? What is the impact of technology for the future?" Their goal is to introduce us to "far out" advancements, inspire us to see the future, and consider how these ideas might impact our lives for better or worse. Are concepts like cheap access to space for all, brain-computer interfaces, or robotic construction good or bad, and why?
