Communication: Rockhurst Advantage

A student-centered approach

The Communication faculty use a student-centered approach in advising, instructing and coordinating internships for students. Students work closely with highly educated and qualified faculty members who emphasize student development in their small classes.

Hands-on experience

Faculty members have valuable connections in the Kansas City business community to help students find the internship opportunities that fit them best. Selected courses are taught by local professionals who offer networking opportunities and discuss current issues and trends.

Capstone project

Communication majors gain valuable consulting experience during their senior capstone by working closing with various nonprofit organizations to identify communication challenges. Students use their understanding of communication processes, models, concepts and theories to analyze and evaluate what they see in these organizations and then propose practical and workable solutions to those challenges.

Communication tutors

Outstanding communication majors and minors serve as communication tutors in Rockhurst’s Learning Center. Communication tutors help Rockhurst students with oral presentation skills and with speech writing. Through tutoring, communication tutors deepen their understanding of the subject and sharpen valuable skills in communication and interpersonal relations. Tutors also gain valuable information about topics such as learning styles, active listening, effective questioning and setting goals for tutoring sessions.
