New Student Support Group

An informative, interactive, and fun discussion group for first-year students. This group is for new students who are adjusting to college life.

Three Meetings:
September 10, Thursday, 3-4 pm: Get to know other first year students
September 17, Thursday, 3-4 pm: Learn about yourself and your relationships
September 24, Thursday, 3-4 pm: How to take advantage of all the available opportunities and organizations

Time to Party: Organization and Time Management
Facilitator: Dr. Rick Hanson

Trouble getting or staying organized? Are you falling behind, feeling overwhelmed, or forgetting about important projects, tests or meetings? Whether diagnosed with ADD or not, much of stress college students experience is associated with trying to stay on top of many activities competing for your time and attention. This series will focus on how to balance your life in college, including time management, prioritizing, and organizational strategies. Please contact Rick at rick.hanson@rockhurst.edu or 501-4275. Meditation Group
Facilitator: Dr. Elbert Darden

A group for students who are interested in relaxation and self-reflection. Contrary to popular belief, meditation and relaxation is not just used to put us to sleep. Learning to relax actually helps us to focus our attention to bear on whatever tasks we need to undertake. A wonderful side effect is a relaxed body and reduced stress levels. Sound interesting? Stress is the number one factor interfering with academic performance and personal relationships. These skill-building workshops are designed to help participants better understand their stress and expand their range of coping strategies. Why College Students Don’t Sleep Well and What To Do About It

Over half of all college students report that poor sleep is a significant issue. A series of workshops is being developed for students who struggle with poor quality or quantity of sleep and will focus on simple strategies to build effective sleeping habits and routines.
