Rick Hanson, Ph.D.
Counseling Center Director
Dr. Hanson is a licensed psychologist. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Kansas and his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University. In addition to college mental health, Dr. Hanson has also worked in emergency psychiatric services. He has special interest in working with Social Anxiety, Test Anxiety, Stress and Coping, Depression, ADHD, and Sport Psychology. He has taught as an adjunct and part-time instructor at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Rick is married and has a daughter and twin boys.
Elbert E. Darden, Ph.D.
Assistant Director
Dr. Darden is a licensed psychologist. He received his B.A. from Rice University (Houston, Texas), his Masters of Divinity (M. Div.) degree from Columbia Theological Seminary (Decatur, Georgia), and his Ph. D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. During graduate school he had the opportunity to work in community mental health and did group and individual counseling with residents in a substance abuse rehabilitation center. He has experience working with individuals, couples, groups and has worked as a corporate trainer and an executive coach. Both his pre-doctoral and post-doctoral internships were completed in a university counseling center. In addition, Elbert served as a pastor in the Presbyterian Church at the administrative and congregational level. In his free time, Elbert enjoys spending time with his family, his dog, and gardening. An avid sports fan, he confines his interest mainly to watching now more than participating. Elbert is married and has two children.
Shu-Fen Shih, Ph.D.
Psychologist/Outreach Coordinator
Dr. Shih is a licensed psychologist in Missouri and Kansas. She received her M. Ed. and B.Ed. (both in Counseling)
at National Changwha University of Education in Taiwan
. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the
University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed her
pre-doctoral internship in Psychology at the University
of Illinois-Urbana Champaign Counseling Center. Before beginning her career at Rockhurst, Dr. Shih was a licensed psychologist at the University of North Dakota Counseling Center, where she worked for four years. She
especially enjoys working with minority students, international
students, and adults in general. She has received specialized
training in eating disturbance treatment, sexual abuse
and assault treatment. Her areas of clinical interest
include cross-culture and gender issues, and how those
issues are developed by their culture and by the socialization
process. She is especially interested in understanding
racial/ethnic identity, role and nature of counseling
in non-Western cultures.
Dr. Shih likes to spend time with her family and talk
to her friends. She also likes to cook different Chinese
dishes. She enjoys exploring more about American life
and its cultures and she enjoys trying new activities.
Traveling back to Taiwan to visit her family is especially
important to her. Also she enjoys playing with her cats,
Hunter and Baby.
