Campus-Wide Service Projects

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”  -Anne Frank

At Rockhurst, there are a variety of opportunities to contribute your talents and efforts -- through both community service and service-learning. Rockhurst also offers a variety of campus-wide service projects.

Ceremony of Lessons and Carols – November/December 2008
Members of the Rockhurst community share the spirit of the Christmas Season by giving food, gifts and money for the Christmas Basket Program through St. Francis Xavier Social Ministries.  Every year, Rockhurst provides Christmas dinner for more than 250 people, as well as supplies of food, medicine and cash contributions.  The Ceremony of Lessons and Carols, a festive holiday concert and program performed by Rockhurst students and faculty at St. Francis Xavier Parrish where the admission is canned goods for the Christmas Basket Program.

Global Youth Service Day – April 25, 2009
This event coincides with National and Global Youth Service Day and enables students from different campus organizations to work together in service to others.

Finucane Service Project
Sunday, August 17, 2008

Each year, the Finucane Service Project welcomes incoming students to Rockhurst and introduces them to service – an important part of Rockhurst’s mission as a Catholic and Jesuit university.  The Finucane Service Project gives the campus an opportunity not only to experience service but also to celebrate the spirit of service.  Named in the memory of the Rev. William Finucane, S.J., Rockhurst initiated the Finucane Service Project to honor his commitment to introducing freshmen to both service and the neighborhood around campus.

Eighteen area organizations were served during this year’s project.  Participants cleaned streets and yards in the neighborhoods near Rockhurst, made fleece blankets for sick children, cleaned classrooms at schools, painted the sanctuary of a church, clean the kitchen and dinging room of  a local food pantry and many other projects.  The Finucane Service Project is a wonderful way to build relationships through service between freshmen, the Rockhurst community, and the greater Kansas City area.

For more information on campus-wide service projects please contact Alicia Douglas, director, Community Relations and Outreach, 816.501.4306.
