Workshop Schedules


The following workshops are periodically available for Rockhurst University students, faculty and staff to develop skills in using RefWorks, FirstSearch databases, the internet, the online catalog and other library databases.Workshops are held in the computer lab on the mezzanine level of the library. A Rockhurst University computer services network account is required to attend these workshops.

If you cannot attend a class for which you have registered please call 816-501-4142 prior to the class time. Ask to speak to the librarian on duty and tell the librarian of your need to cancel your registration. You may reschedule for another class if you wish, however, classes fill up quickly so think carefully before canceling out of a class.

[There is a minimum of 3 attendees and a maximum of 15 attendees to hold classes for the sessions listed below unless special arrangements are made with a librarian.]

RefWorks
Librarians offer a one hour training class on using RefWorks to create bibliographies for research papers and creating citations within the text of a research paper.

In this workshop you will learn how to do the following:

  • How to access RefWorks using the Library's Electronic  Resources
  • Create an account
  • Navigate around RefWorks
  • Get your references into RefWorks [Direct import from an Online Database, Importing Text File, Entering Reference Manually]
  • Search online information within RefWorks Database
  • Search your RefWorks Database
  • Organize your references
  • Build your bibliography [Quick Bibliography]
  • Add in text citations [Using One Line/Cite View, Using Write N' Cite]

FirstSearch
Librarians offer a 2-hour training class for Rockhurst students and faculty on the best methods of searching the many online databases available in FirstSearch. Completion of this training is mandatory in order to access FirstSearch due to the cost to the library of using this service. Sessions are limited to 15 people.

Internet
Librarians offers the following workshops on using the Internet:

  • Search the Web With Success
    This 2-hour workshop for Rockhurst students, faculty and staff explores what is and what is not available on the WWW; search engines and how they work; search directories, evaluating web sites for quality. Participants will receive hands-on training and handouts from the instructor. Requirements: You should have some experience using the WWW and either Internet Explorer, Mozilla or Netscape. Sessions are limited to 15 people.

    This 2-hour workshop for Rockhurst students, faculty and staff introduces the participant to the part of the WWW not visible to users through traditional search engines. Participants will receive hands-on training and handouts from the instructor. Requirements: You should have completed the "Search the Web With Success" workshop or have experience with the advanced features of search engines. Sessions are limited to 15 people.

Librarians offer a 45-minute workshop for Rockhurst students, faculty and staff on basic and advanced search methods for successfully using the online catalog to identify materials in the library collection and in other MOBIUS libraries. Sessions are limited to 15 people.
